Description
LIFE -AS - YOU - WAIT
Wislawa Szymborska
Life as you wait.
A play without rehearsal.
Body without fitting.
Head absent of forethought.
I don't know the role I'm cast in.
I only know it's mine unexchangeable.
The subject of play
must be guessed live on stage.
Barely prepared to the honour of living,
I struggle with imposed rhythm of action.
I improvise, while detesting improvisation.
I trip every step over my ignorance.
My way of being tainted with backwater.
My instincts are amateurish.
My stage-fright, self explaining, brings humiliation.
Extenuating circumstances are outright cruel.
Irreversible words and instincts,
stars unaccounted for,
my nature, like a coat buttoned up on the run -
these are the consequences of this haste.
Oh, to rehearse one Wednesday in advance,
or to replay one Thursday once!
But here Friday arrives with a new script.
How could this be? - I'm asking
(in a hoarse voice,
I was not allowed to harrumph off stage).
An elusive thought that it's only a casual test,
taken in a makeshift room. No.
I stand among the stage set and see how solid it is.
Struck by precision of every detail.
The turn stage has functioned for quite a while.
Even the furthest nebulae were lit.
Oh, I'm without doubt: it's an opening night.
And everything I do,
forever turns into things I've done.
